Where I’m coming from and why I’m bloggingLast spring, my husband and I moved into our new home as newlyweds and I immediately set out to make it ours. It was a glorious empty canvas which was also overwhelming at times. I spent countless hours scouring the web, pinning inspiration, researching and searching furniture and products, reading reviews and trying to find said reviews, only to realize the process was super time consuming and overwhelming. If I didn’t LOVE home decor and I wasn’t as dedicated and focused as I was (my husband’s take is probably more like crazy) I would have easily gotten off track and ended up with lots of half finished projects or disjointed rooms! Even though there was a ton of inspiration online, I found there wasn’t a lot of really actionable information like how much does this or that cost to do, what is the quality like of this brand or that product, or what experience have you had with xy or z. I struggled to find thorough reviews or photos of furniture brands and home decor products that gave me enough confidence to purchase large, expensive pieces online. Or I couldn’t find good photos to help me envision what something would look like in MY home. I found that I HAD to make trips to the stores, which were not always easy to get to, to see it in person. I’m lucky enough to live in the San Francisco Bay Area where many of the brands I shopped had actual retail stores but I wondered what I would do if I didn’t live near a store. Returning furniture is a pain and custom pieces aren’t even returnable. I didn’t want to deal with that! In the end, I’m in love with the way our home turned out (of course it’s never finished and always evolving) but it was a journey that took considerable time, energy, and money. And where I can, I would love to share that journey with others because more information will hopefully save you time, energy, and money!
Here are some of the topics I plan to blog about:
- Budgeting – Whether you’re going on your own or working with a designer where do you start? How do you budget when you have no idea what you’re doing or how much stuff costs? Also, costs you forget to account for!
- Online home decor shopping – Yes, you CAN buy furniture online but it’s not always as easy as shopping in person and mistakes are costly. I spent a TON of time scouring e-tailers and I’ll be reviewing those sites, their products, and what I ultimately bought.
- To DIY or not to DIY – We’re all busy people and time is money! I’ll share my thoughts on DIY to help you decide if it’s worth the effort, time, or money saved.
- Designing and space planning – You CAN have a functional AND beautiful home. I’ll share how a little planning ahead impacted my design and purchase decisions.
